Meet Us
Davorin (Buco) Cavar
Lead Guitar
Davorin Buco (sounds like Bootso, his childhood nickname) Cavar, a native of Sarajevo, began his career as lead with various rock bands in his hometown and in Chicago where he moved in 1995. Inspired by one of his lifelong musical idols Django Reinhardt since the early age, around 2004 he turned his attention to the acoustic guitar to focus on gypsy jazz. Buco has studied with such jazz guitar greats as Tony do Rosario and Alfonso Ponticelli. Upon moving to the DC area he helped form DC Ambiance, the newest addition to the gypsy jazz scene in the nation’s capital.
Suzanne Gekker
Clarinet
Suzanne is an active professional classical musician and teacher. She received her music degrees from Yale School of Music and Cincinnati Conservatory. In the DC area, she plays regularly with the Washington Concert Opera, National Philharmonic, Alexandria Symphony, Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra, Wolf Trap Opera and the National Cathedral Orchestra. She is also sought after to perform in several freelance trad jazz and gypsy jazz groups, and has recently performed with the Annapolis-based Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra.
Randy Stein
English Concertina
Randy Stein is a classically trained musician who studied the English Concertina with the famed Matusewitch Brothers, Boris and Sergei. A former circus acrobat and founding member of the Big Apple Circus, Randy performed in the US and Canada in festivals, shows, and theaters including recitals at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Randy has recorded with various musical artists including John Lennon and Yoko Ono on their album Double Fantasy. In addition to his love of gypsy jazz and performing with DCA, Randy arranges and plays a solo repertoire of Classic American and European Standards and is currently performing and recording with the Jewish Folk Band, Ein Lanu Z'man.
Bill Parmentier
Rhythm Guitar
Bill grew up playing rock guitar but was bit by the "Django bug" while living on Whidbey Island, WA (home of DjangoFest Northwest) in the early 2000s and befriending the late Dudley Hill of Pearl Django. During this time, he formed and performed with the Harbor Hot Club before moving to Northern Europe. Bill studied with famed gypsy jazz guitarists Robin Nolan and Lollo Meier. Bill extended his love of the genre by attending and jamming at some of the major gypsy jazz festivals in France and the Benelux region.
Cyndy Elliott
Acoustic Upright Bass
Cyndy is a life-long resident of the Washington DC area and currently works as a freelance bassist, performing many different styles of music in big bands, small combos, orchestras, and chamber ensembles, and is the co-leader of the jazz octet Swingtopia. She has performed at many of the major venues in DC, including the Atlas Theatre, Bethesda Blues and Jazz, Blues Alley, Bohemian Caverns, Twins Jazz, and the Kennedy Center. Cyndy has traveled and performed with shows and in concert at various musical venues throughout the United States, Asia, and Europe.
